- Since 2021: Discover Airlines' long-term commitment to Home of Good Hope
- help alliance funding project enables new building
- Shelter, education, and daily meals for around 1200 children in Katutura
With a ceremonial groundbreaking, Discover Airlines CEO Bernd Bauer and Monica Imanga, founder of the Namibian organization Home of Good Hope, officially launched the construction of a new aid facility for children and young people in Windhoek on October 20. Over the next few months, a place will be created where around 1200 children can receive a warm meal every day and play and learn in a safe environment.
The new facility will be built in the Katutura district, one of the poorest areas of Windhoek. Since 2007, the organization has been working to help children and young people in the region, especially those living in disadvantaged settlements without permanent housing or stable family structures. With a soup kitchen, educational opportunities, and psychosocial care, the team already reaches hundreds of children who would otherwise have no access to basic services.
The contact between Discover Airlines and Home of Good Hope was established in 2021 as part of a Christmas activity initiated by employees. Since then, Discover Airlines has been involved in the project in a variety of ways: through fundraising, volunteer work on site, and active support with bureaucratic processes in the background. In 2022, the project was officially added to the project portfolio of help alliance, the Lufthansa Group's aid organization. Thanks to funding of €100,000, the long-awaited construction project could now be tackled.
“The support we have received from Discover Airlines and help alliance over the past few years goes far beyond material assistance—it comes from the heart. What began as a chance encounter has developed into a close friendship, and we are deeply grateful for the trust placed in our work. Being part of the help alliance support program is a huge step for us as a small organization – and a strong sign that our children are not forgotten," says Monica Imanga, founder of Home of Good Hope.
“We are delighted that, together with help alliance, we have been able to build a bridge between the dedicated team here on the ground and our guests, who have contributed to the implementation of this project with many small donations made on board. It is a wonderful opportunity to give something back to this city and the people who have welcomed us and our guests with open arms for many years,” says Bernd Bauer, CEO of Discover Airlines.
Windhoek was one of the first destinations in Discover Airlines' flight schedule and has since held special significance for the young leisure airline. Today, Discover Airlines flies a total of ten times a week from Frankfurt and – since spring 2025 – also from Munich to the Namibian capital. The airline offers the only direct connections from Europe to Windhoek.
